The Grand Contradiction

If intelligent life is a natural outcome of cosmic evolution, the sky should be crowded with artificial transmissions, megastructures, and exploration probes. The fact that it isn't is the most urgent question in science.

While walking to lunch at Los Alamos, Nobel laureate Enrico Fermi asked his colleagues a deceptively simple question: "Where are they?" Given that stars exist billions of years older than our Sun, an early civilization should have easily spread across the entire galaxy by now.

Economist and futurist Robin Hanson formalized this dilemma into the concept of The Great Filter. There must be at least one evolutionary barrier so improbable or deadly that it stops virtually all species before they can colonize the stars.
